El contexto histórico de la película coincide con un momento en que las mujeres comenzaban a reclamar mayor protagonismo, no era tan raro que algunas mujeres llegaran a copar grandes puestos en grandes empresas aunque ni mucho menos era lo común. Armas de mujer rebosa de un feminismo saludable, de unas ganas de demostrar lo que la gente con una pizquita de inteligencia sabemos: las mujeres valen tanto como los hombres. No obstante, en este film lo que llama la atención es que las trabas para alcanzar los objetivos de la protagonista se los pone una mujer y no un hombre. También llama la atención el hecho de que la protagonista carece de estudios en los que respaldarse para obtener resultados, es una persona que obviamente no los va a necesitar pues está en la tierra de las oportunidades donde todo puede pasar.
El hecho es que una mujer inteligente y sin estudios se irá ganando a pulso su mayor protagonismo a base de astucia y engaños, a base de dejar atrás malos hábitos y novios nada recomendables, a base de escarvar más fondo que el resto y encontrar tesoros donde otros no ven nada. Todo ello acompañado de la casi inseparable historia de amor entre la peja protagonista. Melanie Griffith borda el papel y su compañero masculino (Harrison Ford) esta a la altura de una comedia poco usual del gran Mike Nichols, un director que sabe imprimir un sello especial y atractivo a sus películas, donde las historias son más importantes que las imágenes y donde las imágenes resumen de manera precisa las palabras y los sentimientos. Destacar también a Sigourney Weaver, una actriz polivalente donde las haya, que sabe encarnar a la perfección a la típica víbora sin escrúpulos y manipuladora que vendería su alma al diablo por el éxito y el poder.
Ya no se hacen películas de esta factura técnica, o quizás si, el hecho es que ahora en la era del DVD se ha perdido un poco esa ambientación y esa luz que mostraban las ciudades, ahora se generan en exceso paisajes por ordenador, donde muchas veces se peca de falta de realismo para dar la sensación de que todo tiene que ser perfecto cuando no lo es. Armas de mujer nos rescata en este siglo 21 la importancia que tiene en la vida arriesgarse y creer en nuestras propias convicciones, torcerse del camino que parece preestablecido y vivir el momento cunatas más veces se pueda mejor.
